Kung Fu Hustle with Bono

Last Friday, April 1, I had one of the most intensely spiritual and wonderful concert going experiences I've ever participated in. There's something about the way that music gets so involved with itself, something about the way it wraps around us as beings, and truly it takes on a life of its own, so much to the point that I don't think the musicians themselves know what is going on. There's something about 40,000 people screaming the words, "I still haven't found what I'm looking for!" that just reflects the cry of humanity. There's something about 40,000 chanting the word "Yahweh!" To some, it is singing along with four of the greatest rock stars in the world, to others, it is crying out the name of the Savior. God bless, U2. There really is no other band quite like them. Pull down the vanities of pop-dom, rock stardom, of trendiness, of music hobbyists, of all conventions, and U2 would still make great music. It is not about being in-vogue, not about being necessarily current, it is just about them being seriously great musicians.

This past Tuesday, I saw a preview for KUNG FU hustle starring Stephen Chow. I remember growing up with Stephen Chow films... He was just getting big after a few years of me being here in the US. My mother likened him to my brother Derek's looks, although she said it was unfortunate that he was such a minor star. This minor star has now come full bloom, as KUNG FU HUSTLE is a masterfully entertaining film. It has all the elements that I so appreciate about Chinese, especially Hong Kongese, cinema: perfectly rowdy, slapstick comedy where timing is essential. It is also wonderfully saccharine, but with a movie this good, this funny, this adventurous, a viewer forgives it. All the special effects of a kung fu movie are over-magnified to heightened sensibility and deliciously so. See it for yourself!
