I've been thinking alot about the grander purposes of my life lately. How should I apply myself? What's the greatest way I could serve God? How will I be happy? How do they get the cream in the Krispy Kreme? There are some things that only God knows.
The only solution was to go to my little tiny corner cafe and contemplate these mysteries. Pulling into the parking lot, I cut off a tiny old granny in her Caddy who was vying for a spot. After all, I was eager to get down and ready to some Bible reading and answer-getting and she had the rest of her day to get a spot.
The line at the counter was a bit long and I couldn't help but feel sorry for all of us busy people as we watched the happy barista making chatty talk with each customer. Apparently, she didn't have places to go like some of us do. Did she think her friendliness was going to make someone's day? Hm. Coffee from Java or coffee from Sumatra? Are they the same place? Do they have poor people there who need the Gospel? Maybe God is speaking to my purpose through coffee choice. Hm.
After I failed to tip the minimum wage making barista and rushed passed a pregnant woman with her toddler looking for a seat, I sat down, put up my feet and prayed. "God. O Great God. Show me your purposes for my life. Please and stuff! What am I suppose to be doing? Surely, you made me to be greater than my current circumstances! Isn't this just 'for now'? When is my big moment coming?"
Eyes teary, heart aching, I looked outside. A beggar drank the remnants of someone's morning coffee from the garbage. Drivers screamed at each other in afternoon traffic. A million lives without a Savior's spirit. It seems like sometimes God Himself did not care about big decisions.
I got up to leave. As I approached the door, I noticed Caddy Granny also walking by. I tried to hide my face but since I got to the door first, I held it open to for her. She looked up, her wrinkles softening.
"Why, thank you. That's the nicest thing anyone's done for me today." She scuttled by, slow but efficient. I watched her walk to her car, parked down the street. As she got in, God gave me my answer. He whispered, "People."
But many [that are] first shall be last; and the last first.

That sure is true. Great news is there are people everywhere, so there are always opportunities for our purpose :)
Amen, and amen.
I always get a little skeptical when people ask a question along the lines of: "What's the greatest way I could serve God?" because God's definition of "great" and the world's definition of "great" are almost never the same; yet I think sometimes when we use that word in thinking about our lives, we tend toward our culture's definition of "great."
