My girlfriends and Chris threw me a 30th birthday party at Marvin and Jean's house. I just invited a handful of friends. I have never had a party thrown for me, cos I'm usually the party thrower, so this was really quite novel. It was a lesson in being served, accepting the goodness I received and appreciating what people were willing to give. It was a huge blessing.
The best and most unexpected part was when people were asked to share stories about me. Let me just say that there were a couple stories that I casually forgot, but then was reminded of. For instance, when once upon a time, I thought it was so silly and stupid that Kelley didn't have a steady and adoring boyfriend (like she does now) so I went ahead and posted an online personals ad for her. Um, without her knowing it. Months pass, we have our laughs and then when the most promising boy surfaced, it turned out to be my exboyfriend's roommate! We casually aborted the mission without another email. I had totally forgotten that story. I am so glad she reminded me!
And then there were just things said about me that I don't deserve. Good things, I mean. I swear, these people don't know me well enough. Or maybe better yet, it is cos they know me so well, that they just accept me anyway.
Chris presented me with a gorgeous handmade book - pasted with so many beautiful notes from my friends. Advice on life, thoughts on me, letters that made it around the world just to be included in the book. Thank you, everyone.
I also saw my family in Northern California. I haven't spent a birthday with them in over ten years! It was a real treat to be there with them. True to form, I got to pick out my own cake, even ;). We had my favorite meal (dim sum) and watched Mr. Bean's Holiday (not too many choices when you are with a 4 and 6 yr old).
Check out the good times here.
